El Resorte Upholstery Shop, 2014
Yvonne found out she was an upholsterer by chance. When she was in her twenties, a friend asked if she could accompany her to buy some furniture. While at the store, her friend pointed out a particular piece, to which Yvonne answered that she thought it was poor- ly made. She didn’t feel the finishing was right. What Yvonne didn’t realize was that the salesperson had over- heard her. She looked at Yvonne and said, “You are right. Can you make a nice set of pillows for me?” She said yes, although she didn’t even know how to sew a button. Two months later, thinking Yvonne knew what she was doing, the saleswoman showed up with a big job for her. At first, Yvonne panicked, but then she put her mind to learn the trade, and that’s how she became an upholsterer.
